~ A Movable Fiesta... ~
From the Smithsonian.com:Buenos Aires—"fair winds" in Spanish—has gone through many incarnations and is reinventing itself yet again. And foreigners are playing a big part this time, too, thanks to a weak peso that attracts people from all over. The capital city, situated on the Río de la Plata, one of the world's largest estuaries, has long been described as the Paris of South America, but lately people have begun comparing it to Paris of the 1920s, emblematic as the place where artists, intellectuals and others from around the world pursued their passions.
~ Why Buenos Aires ~
Some people get antsy when you announce that you’ll be moving ‘somewhere in South America’. We got a lot of “Not this country, right? But not that country, of course…” So, we decided to tell people Buenos Aires, Argentina just to set minds at ease. However, sometimes a thing that is uttered becomes a thing that is true. People who had been to the city complemented its charms. People who knew people who knew said it was a gem. So, the universe convinced us in short order that Buenos Aires, which some have called the ‘Paris of South America’, would be our next stop. We’ll tend to the long held desire to become fluent in another language, Espanol (with a bonus porteno accent). Wasting not a moment, we’ll be attending an intensive language training program, at Casa Che, our first month in the country. Our second month we hope to head for the hills and work on an organic farm or two via the Wwoof (World Wide Opportunities on Organic Farms) program in Argentina . We have not yet figured this out, but the prospects look very interesting!
After the language training and farm work, we’ll be ready to settle in to the cheapest apartment in the most interesting neighborhood. We’ll find jobs! Right? We hope so, anyway. Charlie will look for a job in development that will make the world a better place, as always.Skye will try her hand at being a writer and artist full time, with the requisite night or online job.
Charlie’s eyeing that mountain, the highest in the Americas with the fun-to-say name, Aconcagua. He’s also looking to gain further experience with luthiery (stringed instrument building). Skye'll spend lots of time in library reading rooms doing just that as well as writing and drawing. She'll keep an eye out for cheap yoga, too. To work off all that famed red wine and Argentine beef we’ll be dancing the Tango, that most celebrated of Argentine dances.
What else? We’re not sure either. Check the blog to find out.
